Shingle bundles
-Shingle type
Roof complexity (waste)
How this is calculated
This is a materials count, not a price estimate. It uses 3 bundles per square for standard shingles and 4 for heavy or designer profiles, after adding your waste allowance and rounding up to whole squares.

Shingle bundles, explained
Every figure below comes from the same verified data the calculator runs on.
How many bundles of shingles do you need?
Standard shingles, both 3-tab and regular architectural, ship at 3 bundles per square, so each bundle covers about 33 square feet. That's the whole formula: squares to cover, times bundles per square. A 25-square roof in standard shingles is 75 bundles. The same roof in a heavy designer profile is 100, because thick shingles ship at 4 bundles per square.
| Roof size | Standard (3 per square) | Heavy / designer (4 per square) |
|---|---|---|
| 15 squares | 45 bundles | 60 bundles |
| 20 squares | 60 bundles | 80 bundles |
| 25 squares | 75 bundles | 100 bundles |
| 30 squares | 90 bundles | 120 bundles |
Get the squares right first
Bundle math is only as good as the squares going in, and squares must include waste: about 10 percent on a simple gable, 15 on a standard hip, 20 on a complex roof. Haven't sized the roof yet? The area and squares calculator gets you from footprint and pitch to a waste-included count this tool accepts directly.
Shingle ordering tips that save a second trip
Buy whole bundles only, and round up, not down. Starter courses and ridge caps consume material beyond the field area, and nobody has ever regretted having one spare bundle in the garage for future repairs. Check the wrapper too: a few specialty products package at different coverage than the standard 3 per square, and the wrapper wins every argument.
Frequently asked questions
How many bundles of shingles for a 2,000 square foot roof?
If 2,000 square feet is finished roof area including waste, that's 20 squares: 60 bundles standard, 80 in heavy designer profiles. If 2,000 square feet is your house footprint, apply pitch and waste first, because the real order will be bigger.
Do 3-tab and architectural shingles use the same bundle count?
For most product lines, yes: 3 bundles per square for both. The step up happens with heavy and designer laminates, which typically ship 4 to the square because each shingle is thicker and covers less.
How much does one bundle cover?
About 33 square feet for products packaged 3 to a square. Coverage per bundle, not shingle count, is the number to compare between brands.
