Gutter costs, explained

Every figure below comes from the same verified data the calculator runs on.

How much do gutters cost in 2026?

Gutters are priced per linear foot, and material sets the rate. A typical 40 by 30 foot single-story home with gutters all the way around needs about 140 linear feet plus 5 downspouts, which prices at $1,620 in aluminum at the national level: $1,260 for the runs at $9 a foot and $360 for the downspouts at $6 a foot. The calculator sizes all of it from your home's footprint.

Gutter cost per linear foot by material

MaterialTypical per footRangeTypical lifespan
Aluminum$9$6 to $1220 to 30 years
Galvanized steel$11$8 to $1515 to 30 years
Copper$28$18 to $4050 to 100 years

Aluminum is the default for a reason: light, rust-proof, and cheap to work with. Steel takes ladder dings and snow loads better. Copper is a design decision as much as a drainage one, and it outlives the others by decades.

How many linear feet and downspouts you need

For gutters all the way around, your linear footage is the perimeter: length plus width, times two. A simple gable roof that only drains along the eaves may need just the two long sides. Downspouts follow a rule the calculator applies for you: one for roughly every 30 feet of gutter, minimum two. That's how 140 feet gets 5 downspouts. Gutters price nationally rather than by region here, so treat this as a planning number and let local bids firm it up.

Gutter guards and other add-on costs

Gutter guards. $7 to $20 per foot, $10 typical. They can cost more than the gutters, so decide based on how much your trees actually drop.

Tearing out old gutters. $1 to $2 per foot on top.

A second story. About $1.50 more per foot for access and safety.

Upsizing to 6-inch. About $1.50 more per foot. Worth it on big roofs and in heavy-rain regions, where 5-inch gutters overflow.

Frequently asked questions

What do gutters cost per linear foot installed?

Aluminum typically runs $9 per foot installed, in a $6 to $12 range. Steel typically runs $11 and copper $28. Downspouts price by their own footage, $6 per foot in aluminum.

How long do gutters last?

Aluminum typically 20 to 30 years, galvanized steel 15 to 30, copper 50 to 100. Cleaning genuinely matters: overflowing gutters rot fascia boards and shorten everything's life.

Are seamless gutters worth it?

Usually, on long straight runs. Seamless and half-round styles cost more than sectional K-style, and the payoff is fewer joints, which means fewer future leak points. On a short, cut-up roofline the advantage shrinks.
