Roof pitch is rise over a 12-inch run: a 6:12 roof climbs 6 inches for every 12 inches it travels. The same slope written as an angle is 26.57 degrees. The number that actually costs you money is the slope multiplier: the square root of 1 plus rise over run, squared. Multiply your flat plan area by it and you get the true sloped surface you'll buy materials for. At 6:12 the multiplier is 1.118, so a 2,000 square foot footprint carries about 2,236 square feet of actual roof.

How to measure your roof pitch
The reliable method takes a 12-inch level and a tape measure in the attic. Hold the level flat against the underside of a rafter. At the level's 12-inch mark, measure straight down to the rafter. Why the roof pitch multiplier matters for cost
Ordering from the footprint without applying the multiplier is the classic way to come up short. Even a common 6:12 roof is nearly 12 percent bigger than it looks from above, and a 12:12 roof is 41 percent bigger.
